| Would I have my eBay book store if William Caxton had not started to print books and translate large amounts of works into English probably for if he had not done it I am sure some else would have. The printing press as an invention must rank alongside the wheel in advances for mankind. It is an invention that enables me to have an online ebay book store and earn my living.
From a personal point of view I cannot remember exactly when I started devouring books previous to the discovery of books my reading consisted of school work the Dandy and Beano Black Bob in one of the weekly newspapers I had also read some fairy stories and young children鈥檚 books some copies of which I sell in my eBay book store now. I was born at the start of the second world war and for the first five or six years of my life my father was a stranger to me being on active service in the army it was after he was home from war service for some time possibly a year or two so I was probably seven or eight. I was looking in this huge cupboard one day and it was filled with books I looked through some of them and that started me off.
I cannot remember the first book I read The Water Babies was certainly close, Coral Island, the Dog Crusoe more of R M Ballantynes, Peter the Whaler I absorbed myself in the stories it felt like I was there. I listed in my eBay book store recently a book called kidnapped now that was a book that fired my imagination. I was lucky even although I was born and brought up in the Western Highlands of Scotland there were books at home the school library and the village hall also had a library so I was well catered for. I worked on construction sites all over the UK I remember living and working in Gloucester in the late fifties and early sixties there were several bookshops that had this great system where you bought a book for 6d and brought it back after you had read it and got 3d for it ahh happy days.
I never thought that I would sell books for a living in my eBay book store I have hundreds of books mostly out of print and first editions. Nowadays I very rarely read a fiction book I read how to and self development books my love of books is still as strong as ever. When I am looking through the books prior to listing them I have to forcibly stop myself from reading them if I did'nt I would never get any thing done. | |
